Inspiration and Perspective
The photographic journey encourages all who embark upon its course to observe the world with a zest and zeal few other pursuits may will or warrant. It leads to places modest and grand and reveals a world as inspiring in its gift and grace as it is humbling in its might and majesty. It may take you to places long-familiar as well as to those rarely admired and embolden each step to expose hidden virtues. In return, the photographic journey instills a sense of gratitude for each and all the temporal moments of a fragile existence, and rewards those who pursue its means with visions to outlast the most vivid memory. Over the course of the past several years, I've devoted countless hours, resource and energy exploring the visual bounty of my native state to reveal a land of diverse and abundant beauty. It gives me great pleasure to share my experiences with all who harbor a love of life and land.
In Michigan and abroad the Great Lakes Region, I find a land that is both docile and wild, rich in natural resource, and diverse in geology, ecology, climate and culture. Bound by the vast expanses of freshwater collectively called the Great Lakes, Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas possess uncommon characteristics shared with few other territories in the world. From the sandy perches of its coastal dunes, to the precipitous wilderness along its boreal shores, the Michigan landscape presents an amalgam of terrestrial visions enlivened by seasonal change and climatic conditions. Set against the modest backdrop of the American Midwest, this land captivates my spirit and provides an unlikely stage to fulfill nearly all my visual aspirations. I owe a debt of gratitude to those individuals and organizations who have plotted, preserved, and protected its natural heritage.
As a photographer concerned with objectivity, documenting the inherent beauty of nature as it may be experienced through the lens is of vital importance in my creative ethic. The photographs presented herein comprise a small selection of my work depicting finite moments that have left an indelible impression and have withstood my personal critique and rejection. Despite how meticulous one strives to be, outdoor photography is ever subject to the whims of nature and all its temperaments. Being mindful of light and mood, and qualities that arrest the eye and enrich the visual senses, commands my choice of place in time. Some of these moments are met with spontaneity or serendipitous circumstance and many more are achieved through patient observation and perseverance. In any event, I hope you'll find at least half as much enjoyment in viewing my photography as I have had experiencing the places of its origin.
